DOES VINYL SIDING NEED TO BE SEALED?
No. Unlike wood siding and some composite siding brands that do require proactive maintenance to protect the materials, vinyl siding is created with polymers that are durable as well as UV-inhibitors that resist fading. Since the color selected is manufactured into the vinyl material vs. just on the surface, vinyl siding will not require painting like wood materials will.
DO I HAVE TO INSTALL THE SAME VINYL SIDING AROUND THE ENTIRE HOUSE?
No. The beauty of working with vinyl siding is that it can mixed and matched with other styles of siding such as a cedar shingle impression or vertical board & batten style siding. Many homeowners will have the horizontal vinyl siding installed only on the sides and rear of the home, with an upgraded designer style siding across the front of the home.
CAN VINYL SIDING BE INSTALLED OVER MY EXISTING SIDING?
Yes. For homes that have only one layer of existing siding, Building Code allows new vinyl siding to be installed over. This requires rigid foam panel insulation to be installed over the original siding first. This creates a flat surface for the new siding to be installed onto and extra-long nails are used to penetrate through all the materials for a properly secured installation.
IS COMPOSITE SIDING BETTER THAN VINYL SIDING?
The short answer is no. Both materials will last just as long, but the decision comes down to personal preference based off the look of the siding. Composite siding (cement board or compressed wood board) is typically a wider textured flat board that has a larger exposure with minimal shadow lines that creates a more seamless appearance. Whereas vinyl siding comes in a more styles with varying depth shadow lines, but generally has more seams that can be seen and is not available wider than 6”.
WHICH TYPE OF SIDING IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE?
Vinyl siding is hands down the least expensive which is why it is the most popular choice of homeowners when replacing their siding. Lower manufacturing costs and labor pricing is what allows vinyl siding to come in at the lowest of all siding types.
