HOW CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL STONE VS MANUFACTURED STONE?
The difference is in the details. When looking closely at a natural stone, there are many unique traits that simply cannot be replicated or manufactured. Many different small colors, lines, tones, & hues are what differentiate the real rocks from the manufactured types.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL NATURAL STONE?
Most installations are completed in 1 to 2 weeks depending on how many sqft. is being installed. Because natural stone is very labor intensive and requires material curing/drying time, it becomes a multi-step process. First a moisture barrier and wire lath is needed to be installed. Next is a parging layer over the lath and scratch coat that needs to dry. Then the stones are cut as necessary and set inn place. Lastly the joints are grouted and sealed.
CAN NATURAL STONE BE INSTALLED IN THE WINTER?
Yes, as long as the temperature is above freezing. The mortar will need time to dry and cure. If exposed to freezing temperatures for a prolonged period of days without the opportunity to dry, the moisture in the uncured mortar can expand and cause cracking.
DOES NATURAL STONE COLOR FADE OVER TIME?
Yes it can. Like all materials left outdoors, the harmful UV rays from the sun can fade even natural stone over time.
WHICH TYPE OF STONE IS BEST FOR EXTERIOR STAIRCASES?
Natural stone is best for exterior staircases primarily due to how thin the rock can be cut down to. With a typical thickness of 1 ¼” to 1 ½” natural stone will not increase the overall mass of your existing staircase. Most homes however will still require new wider step treads to create an overhang lip over the new stone.
